A Public Service Announcement

What is going on I asked?  Why am I experiencing baldness at such a young age as 2 years old?  It was quite the shock to suddenly have my hair falling out as you can imagine.   I’m a handsome dog, but this loss of hair is making me uncomfortable!

So off I go to the doggy doctor to be checked out.  Could it be allergies? Could it be premature aging? No, that would be silly! Could I be sick? Dr. Prieto examines me, thinks maybe I need more vitamins or something,  and home we go with bottle of oil type pills and a gentle shampoo. Hoping for this to be the end of it and hoping my awesome coat grows back.

Nope, nothing changes after a few weeks, and it looks like it’s getting worse. Back to the doctor we go.  She does some blood work, maybe it’s  a thyroid issue she says, whatever that means.  I’ll just lay around sulking, waiting for answers, looking silly and balding! No, I’m not too vain!

Nope, nothing shows up in the blood work. That’s good, I’m otherwise healthy! And it’s back to the doctor we go, and by the way, do I have insurance for this??  She does a skin scraping, nothing there, no bugs of any kind. Good! She then takes a tool and proceeds to punch out some of my skin for a biopsy. “OUCH” she says!!  Yep, she might want to have someone hold me a little tighter if she plans anything like that again. No, I didn’t bite her, just a little warning grab. My eyes, they say “I’m sorry”! I think she knows that! Dr. Prieto is quite the good sport!

Winter blues 2

And then the call comes.  Third time’s a charm, finally an answer! She says it’s called “Seasonal Flank Alopecia”, such big words which mean balding on both sides of my body. Yes, we know that, but why? And how do we fix this? She recommends melatonin, twice a day to help. It may be due to the winter months with less sun being out, it could affect the hair growth. Maybe this, maybe that, here’s to hoping I get my wiry coat back on track.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get used to that melatonin, made me a little too sleepy and unable to wake easily in the morning.  So we’ll just sit back and hope it only needs some time in the sun!  Sunning myself is easy enough, I like it outside! Tomorrow is another day, and each day it looks a little better!

For all of my dog families out there, stuff like this happens sometimes.  Not all dogs get it, and Wirehair Pups like myself aren’t the usual breed affected by this condition. So get your puppies and doggies to the doctor to find out why they may be losing their hair. This has been a Pubic Service Announcement from yours truly, Drax!

Here Comes Peter CottonTail

Something is happening in the next couple of weeks, what is everyone talking about?   I’m hearing about Easter Rabbits? Coloring Eggs? Chicks and Peeps? Is there some surprise for me too? I’m not sure what all the talk is about but I am looking forward to finding out.

I mean, what could possibly be more exciting than rabbits? Game On! I haven’t come into close contact with any, but hoping that will change in upcoming weeks!

And Chicks, I’ve heard about them little peep making chicks.  I haven’t seen any around the yard or the K-R Ranch though. Could they possibly be in my future? They’re so cute! Maybe a new little buddy?

easter chicks

But I have had the privilege of eating eggs, not sure why you would want to color them first.  Is there some special reason, do they taste better that way?

But the most exciting thing I hear is that there will be an Easter Egg Hunt! And anytime you go on a hunt, I’m there, I’m invited and the magic happens!  Hunting and Eggs, Awesome!!

Waiting on a Friend

I’ve been trying to find some new hobbies to conquer or something to keep me busy when I’m not out hunting.  With all this snow,  I am told there is a lack of birds to be flushed at the K&R Ranch. So here I sit in the house biding my time.

Waiting…..wondering…..looking for something to do.  I’m  just waiting on a friend.

Oh, look!!  My friend Adam is playing some kinda game on his little, awesome phone, which I can’t see from way down on the floor.  Let me get a closer look,  maybe I can join in? I’ll try the sweet whispers in the ear trick! Psst!! Oh Adam, let me play too!

Well that was uneventful, unproductive and BORING! There really wasn’t much for me to see on that phone.  Not sure what he finds so interesting.

Oh, goody, he’s got an apple in his other hand!  I LOVE apples!  Hey, maybe just a little bite for your faithful, loyal, loving, and BORED friend??? Please??

That, too, was unproductive. Not so much as a lick!! Time to move on…..

Now I’m looking for a game of toss and fetch, and there’s Grandma in the other room. She looks lonely, like she could go for a brisk game or two!  Come on outside and play with me, Grandma!

I don’t think she can hear me!

Oh Well….thanks Mick, the Rolling Stones sang it best!

I’m just standing in a doorway.
I’m just trying to make some sense.

I’m not waiting on a lady, I’m just waiting on a friend…..

Weekend Warrior

The Weekend!  It’s that time again to get some pheasants, chukers and serious flushing done.  Getting ready on Saturday for my much needed hunt the next day!  I need to get myself some sufficient protein for energy, some exercise to stretch those muscles, I must get some sleep, too, and then I will be ready for sure!

Early morning running is great, playing keep away is better!

Finally, lunch time and I found myself checking out a tuna fish sandwich someone carelessly left unattended for just a short time, but long enough…BAM!  Seriously I am quick!!

Afterwards, it was time to go outside for some exercise, some running in circles, tossing a stick, a little tug of war with Diesel. But the best part was enjoying the sunshine and some sleep!

Dinner time came, and oops, turned your back for a second!  BAM, a piece of T-Bone left on your plate was mine!  Protein is awesome when it’s done medium rare, so delicious! I’m always looking for those moments I can sneak some people food off a plate.

Sunday morning, finally, and it couldn’t come soon enough.  I was up and about early, so very, very early as a matter of fact.   Where are you, when are we going?  I’m ready, WHERE ARE YOU??

8:00 am and off we went to the K-R Ranch and everything was wonderful. I flushed, I pointed and I retrieved.  Then I got tired.  It was a quick and frenzied kind of day, and I really wasn’t as agile and prepared as I thought I was.  We called it a day after about an hour, and back home we went.

Cleaning up the mornings worth of birds, and BAM, I’m out like a light, ZZZZZZZ!

Next weekend isn’t that far off, you can bet I’ll be better prepared!

Doggy Daycare

I’m Baaaaack …. I didn’t disappear, but knowing that my days are pretty much filled with the same old stories and misadventures I didn’t want to bore anyone. There is the continuous jumping up on the counters, still!!  Stealing the knob off the washing machine, again,   but this time it is really broken!  There was the time I got the SECOND set of weather stripping off from around the door …not happy people at all!

I got out of the kitchen gate, twice in one day, stole some socks (almost swallowed one), grabbed a buckwheat pillow and dragged it outside…… don’t know what that filling was, but now it’s all in the grass!!  Yep, I seem to get these moments of crazy, not as often anymore, but when I do, LOOK OUT!!

Recently my hunting partner, master and good buddy had  double knee surgeries done, and would be unable to play and exercise with me for awhile. I missed him when he was gone. We did have some quiet moments together before he left for a week though.

Now that he is home recuperating, I seem to get a little too active around him.  The K-R Ranch has allowed me to visit them during the day, and run with their hunting dogs and play and play and play!!  It is super fun, and at the end of the day, I’m exhausted……

We all get what we need, I get to play at doggy daycare, and my family gets a little break!

I’m thinking  the shenanigans of the past year are definitely and appropriately being called Draxcapades!

I’ve been told not to grab the roll of  paper towels, or eat napkins and begged not to attack and rip open my bed!   I guess these events are proof I’ve been giving it my puppy all! Even after putting everyone through the Draxcapades,  I find  my people must really, truly love me!!  And after all the counter-surfing I’ve done alone, I’m still getting lots of hugs! Counter surfing, a way to make “stealing food” sound kinda cool and fun!

Seriously, who wouldn’t love this face!

There are Facebook sites I’ve heard of called “I Love German Wirehaired Pointers” and “German Wirehaired Pointers” that let many, many people compare their adventures, share pictures and of course share their love of their pups! They have over 4500 members from all over the world!  We are an awesome breed and they know it!

We can make you laugh, we can show you love, we are great hunting dogs, and we are loyal family members.  We are smart, we are clowns and we are devilishly active.

So, remember, if you want a dog who is….
Large, and athletic ( kinda rowdy with great jumping skills)..
Has a wiry coat and whiskery beard ( that drips water)…
Thrives on vigorous exercise ( all day in between meals)..
Is steady-tempered & dependable (yep!)…
Makes a keen watchdog and hunting partner ( no debating that!)…
Than I am what you are looking for in a best friend!

Bored, Bored, Bored

And really confused!

What is wrong with this picture??

What is wrong with these people??

Well I’ll tell you!  Apparently there is something called “target shooting”, which makes  absolutely, positively NO SENSE! Why  are you all wasting  time, effort, and shells on an event that doesn’t include me, or provide me with a chance to retrieve a bird? I don’t think they can adequately answer that question, do you?

So, here I am, stuck in the house while all the fun is happening outside. Bang, bang, bang…..yep, that’s it, that’s all I can do is stand here and listen. So many opportunities lost.

Bang, bang, bang…

I guess I’ll just take a nap, have some sweet dreams of flushing and retrieving birds. And, well, Diesel doesn’t seem to mind me hanging with him.  He’s not a fan of all that noise outside. He just doesn’t get it!

Bored, bored, bored…

Let it Snow, let it Snow, let it Snow…..

Although the GREAT Snow Storm was already a month ago, I’m going to share some pictures of our yard.  It was the coolest thing to have snow so deep I could barely walk, and so thick I could barely see as it came down!20160123_130412-1

But I still was able to sniff out some birds that tried landing in the yard, or maybe it was a squirrel??

And try as I might, and even getting way, way down into the snow with my nose, I couldn’t find anything…..

So I went back to the house to try and help clear the snow from the steps. And my good friend Diesel, well, he just watched from inside the doorway!

Well, well !! Finally !!  They brought along a  photographer to take pictures during our hunt for pheasant, chucker  and whatever else I could flush out at KR Ranch!  I  was so ready for all my close-ups… (is this my good side?)

And action shots…  I GOT ONE !

IMG_2848 (1)

It was really cool having someone  come along on our hunting expedition to capture all my awesomeness on film!  I suppose she captured some good shots of the guys too, since they were there, and they did, in fact, do their part keeping up with me quite well!

It was a fast and furious day, a lot of running, a lot of flushing, a lot of chasing, and most of all, a lot of praise for doing my part.  Occasionally I did get quite involved in the search and felt somewhat lost in all those weeds, but one look over my shoulder and I saw the guys right behind me!  “Way to keep up !!”  See, I can give praise too!

Then it became late, and I was called to come back and that we were done for the day. NOOOO, this is much, too much fun, and I am NOT ready to leave!!  Apparently giving me water to drink was not to help me keep going on, but to lure me back to the jeep to head home.  It came out of their ” bag of tricks”, and here I thought they said bag of treats…that’s in my “must remember for next time” memory!

I was so sad, and also I was not going to make it easy on them!! It took two of them to get me back into that crate!!

It was a good day all around, even if it ended too soon.  On the bright side, I overheard that next week I’ll be going to KR ranch TWO DAYS for some more fun!!  They call it “working the dog”, that’s me the dog,  but it’s definitely not work to me!  Also I’m still wondering where the cheese was that photographer kept promising us all day??

A Hunting We Will Go…

Yes, it’s true, after several practice runs with the long leash, the day is finally here and now I can start to fulfill my destiny of being a hunting dog!

drax hunt

I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so excited.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!  Did you hear, I’m going HUNTING !!

20151105_082851 (1)

IT WAS GLORIOUS!  I heard words of praise and received so much attention for all my hard work.  I think there may be plans to let me join the  Deutsch-Drahthaar Association, you know, if there is one!

I was so confident and I followed most commands.  I flushed, I pointed and I retrieved.  I jumped into the pond, I got dirty, wet and smelly.  It was a GREAT DAY all around!!

The good people of KR Ranch were impressed, so I hear, of my abilities and good instincts for such a young pup.  I rather like them very much too!!

I was bathed after my long day and came home exhausted and smelling pretty.   Maybe I should mention to them I prefer a more manly smell, you know, something like Old Spice or Musk?
