Baaa Baaa Baaad

The Laundry Room. It’s the place where my food dish gets filled up two times a day.  But they keep me waiting a little too long once in awhile, and so the tossing and banging of the dish on the floor will get their attention.

It’s where my water dish gets refreshed several times a day.  But some days it can’t come quick enough for me.  All that running around in the hot weather makes a pup thirsty don’t you know. Good thing I can help myself to some fresh water before the other dogs slurp and slop it all up.

The laundry room, yep, it has many different sounds going on in there, too. Sometimes I enjoy laying on the floor listening to these gentle rumbles coming from the big white machines. Sometimes I try to dig at the stuff I see rolling and spinning around inside them.  I haven’t been caught, but I have left my mark behind. A few scratches here and there, sorry. That scratch on the wall, a little paint could fix that right up!

Then it happened.  While I was casually walking past the room, something caught my eye as it leaped, literally, out of the big white machine.  What luck I thought to myself.  I tracked it down and grabbed it. It was soft and chewy and round and awesome!  But it was also short lived happiness, I was cornered in the laundry room now with nowhere to go.

It was a dryer sheep ball, and I really, really wanted to keep it!  I did put up a fight. Well, not so much a fight as it was more of a clenched jaw. Serious clenching, but I was wrong and finally gave it up.

Sorry little sheep ball of wool!!

Buckets, Bones and Blankets

Dear Blog,

My week in review!

Found this old bucket outside, thought I’d check what was inside of it.  Hmm, smells like there was dirt in it, but not any more from what I can see. They seem to find the need to fill in the many holes I like to dig in the backyard! Well, something’s got to keep them on their toes! Just consider it exercise, I know I do.

Then the bone I was enjoying suddenly, and without warning slid away from me and right through the steps and under the porch it went.  This also keeps them on their toes! All my whining and barking alerts them to the loss of my bone, and someone eventually retrieves it for me!  But Wait? What’s this? The porch steps are being closed up, look there’s a hammer and some wood slats!!   Problem solved I guess.  I will miss the whining, will they?

Now on to the next event of the week, the Blanket banning!  I love blankets, I love anything soft and chewy, but they don’t appreciate my chewing.  There I was, minding my own business. Quietly laying on the floor, quietly gnawing on my blanket, when “cough, cough, gag”! A piece of blanket in my throat! Wow! And suddenly a hand opens my mouth and, wow, digs out a gooey, soft chunk of blanket. “Thank you, thank you for saving me!”  So,yep, that’s the end of that blanket. So, nope, no longer will I be left alone with another one. Probably safer that way!

While most of the time my excitement, my curiosity and my playfulness doesn’t get me in trouble, chewing on that blanket could have really hurt me. If somebody wasn’t there to help me, I could have choked, or swallowed it and got a bad, bad tummy ache if it got stuck inside me!  All’s well that ends well, at least this week!

A Public Service Announcement

What is going on I asked?  Why am I experiencing baldness at such a young age as 2 years old?  It was quite the shock to suddenly have my hair falling out as you can imagine.   I’m a handsome dog, but this loss of hair is making me uncomfortable!

sunning 2

So off I go to the doggy doctor to be checked out.  Could it be allergies? Could it be premature aging? No, that would be silly! Could I be sick? Dr. Prieto examines me, thinks maybe I need more vitamins or something,  and home we go with bottle of oil type pills and a gentle shampoo. Hoping for this to be the end of it and hoping my awesome coat grows back.

Nope, nothing changes after a few weeks, and it looks like it’s getting worse. Back to the doctor we go.  She does some blood work, maybe it’s  a thyroid issue she says, whatever that means.  I’ll just lay around sulking, waiting for answers, looking silly and balding! No, I’m not too vain!

winter blues

Nope, nothing shows up in the blood work. That’s good, I’m otherwise healthy! And it’s back to the doctor we go, and by the way, do I have insurance for this??  She does a skin scraping, nothing there, no bugs of any kind. Good! She then takes a tool and proceeds to punch out some of my skin for a biopsy. “OUCH” she says!!  Yep, she might want to have someone hold me a little tighter if she plans anything like that again. No, I didn’t bite her, just a little warning grab. My eyes, they say “I’m sorry”! I think she knows that! Dr. Prieto is quite the good sport!

Winter blues 2

And then the call comes.  Third time’s a charm, finally an answer! She says it’s called “Seasonal Flank Alopecia”, such big words which mean balding on both sides of my body. Yes, we know that, but why? And how do we fix this? She recommends melatonin, twice a day to help. It may be due to the winter months with less sun being out, it could affect the hair growth. Maybe this, maybe that, here’s to hoping I get my wiry coat back on track.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get used to that melatonin, made me a little too sleepy and unable to wake easily in the morning.  So we’ll just sit back and hope it only needs some time in the sun!  Sunning myself is easy enough, I like it outside! Tomorrow is another day, and each day it looks a little better!

For all of my dog families out there, stuff like this happens sometimes.  Not all dogs get it, and Wirehair Pups like myself aren’t the usual breed affected by this condition. So get your puppies and doggies to the doctor to find out why they may be losing their hair. This has been a Pubic Service Announcement from yours truly, Drax!

Dog Day Afternoons

It’s been a little boring around here, not much going on,  not even so much as food being dropped on the floor. But I’ll wait along with Gunnar to see if that changes! That’s how I keep active, by sprinting for the food to see who gets there first!  I don’t think today is the day, apparently Gunnar is still hopeful!

Last week I had to find a way to amuse myself . I couldn’t find anyone around to play fetch with but I found this big old stick in the yard and hope to get it into the house someday, you know, when they aren’t looking!

Of course I can always just lay around the house and try to stay out of trouble, but that doesn’t last long.  Blankets, am I right? They are too hard to resist, a little gnawing, a little tossing around, a little ripping!! Ooops, I got caught!!

So sorry, that’s about it around here. Diesel and I will stay cozy together on these cold days and wait for Spring like everyone else.

Oh Look!! It snowed last night!!  Fun, fun, fun, chasing snowballs, toys and sometimes even shovels!!  Time for Play!

2017 New Year Resolutions

Christmas is almost here, there are decorations everywhere and in every room. A beautiful tree in the house is always exciting to see. Then there are these owls I spotted in the yard and they’re pretty cool all lit up at night!

Well, decorations are in almost every room. Here in the kitchen where Diesel and I hang out, not too much decorating going on. I have a feeling there isn’t much trust in us to leave all the awesome looking, glittering and bright ornaments and trimmings alone. Even Gunnar gets stuck in the kitchen occasionally with us when all the hustle and bustle of Christmas decorating is happening!

And of course, there’s that Naughty and Nice list going on again this year. I’ve been trying every chance I get to share my toys with Diesel. At least most of the time! Sometimes it’s just too tempting when new toys are bought and to not want them all for myself. Diesel just has to wait while I check them out!  Your turn’s coming, promise!  Just let me gnaw on them a little longer.

Helping in the kitchen is always one of my favorite things to do. Just to let Santa Claus know I’ve been trying to change my ways, I won’t be jumping up on the counter stealing the toast today. Help whip those eggs for you?? It would be my pleasure!

I do have a New Year’s resolution to do better at listening to “commands” and “requests”. And I will be working on that in 2017, because that paper towel on the counter was just taunting me today.  The naughty corner, yes, I hear you……let me know when my two minutes are up.

Let’s all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  By the way, who’s hat is this and why all the fuss to give it back?

Thanksgiving Thoughts

This is my second Thanksgiving with my family, and now I have a Grandma living with us to be most thankful for.   You know how Grandma’s like to spoil their grandchildren?  Well the same can be said about spoiling their grandpuppies!

Occasionally we will be minding our own business, when suddenly a snack of bread will come our way, or chunk of chicken happens upon the floor!   Not sure if it’s intentional all the time, but definitely some of the time!  So I just wait it out!

If I wait long enough by the counter, there’s the chance she will give me treats, or at least there’s the possibility that I can snatch something  when she’s not looking! Toast, yummy!

I’m thankful for another year of being in a loving home, and now being loved by a Grandma!  I mean, really?  How could she resist this face??

Happy Thanksgiving!

Weekend Warrior

The Weekend!  It’s that time again to get some pheasants, chukers and serious flushing done.  Getting ready on Saturday for my much needed hunt the next day!  I need to get myself some sufficient protein for energy, some exercise to stretch those muscles, I must get some sleep, too, and then I will be ready for sure!

Early morning running is great, playing keep away is better!

Finally, lunch time and I found myself checking out a tuna fish sandwich someone carelessly left unattended for just a short time, but long enough…BAM!  Seriously I am quick!!

Afterwards, it was time to go outside for some exercise, some running in circles, tossing a stick, a little tug of war with Diesel. But the best part was enjoying the sunshine and some sleep!

Dinner time came, and oops, turned your back for a second!  BAM, a piece of T-Bone left on your plate was mine!  Protein is awesome when it’s done medium rare, so delicious! I’m always looking for those moments I can sneak some people food off a plate.

Sunday morning, finally, and it couldn’t come soon enough.  I was up and about early, so very, very early as a matter of fact.   Where are you, when are we going?  I’m ready, WHERE ARE YOU??

8:00 am and off we went to the K-R Ranch and everything was wonderful. I flushed, I pointed and I retrieved.  Then I got tired.  It was a quick and frenzied kind of day, and I really wasn’t as agile and prepared as I thought I was.  We called it a day after about an hour, and back home we went.

Cleaning up the mornings worth of birds, and BAM, I’m out like a light, ZZZZZZZ!

Next weekend isn’t that far off, you can bet I’ll be better prepared!

I know, that’s a strange title for a doggy blog, but let me start from the beginning. You’ll understand shortly.

It started like any other day, except that they didn’t give me anything to eat that morning! WHAT?   I literally woke up starving.  Then came the car ride, except I didn’t seem to be taking the usual route to the K-R Ranch. WHAT? How dare they get me into the car and head in the wrong direction!  I was totally confused by all this, and on top of it all, they put me in a crate!

Now I have been a member of this family for one year this past February and I’ve been loving it and all the attention I get.   But occasionally during the past 6 months I’ve heard whispers in the house, like “No, he’s still too young for surgery” and “We should wait a little longer”.  “What are they talking about”, I asked Diesel. He denied knowing anything.

trust issues

And I didn’t learn what all those conversations were about…..until now!!

My manhood, my awesome physique was taken away from me. That’s right, I was neutered!  There were a couple of kitties at the hospital, I think they had the same surgery. Sorry for your loss…..

So it’s official, I’ve been taken off the list of up and coming STUD dogs you want to meet and breed!!   I don’t remember agreeing to this invasion into my personal life!

When we got home from the doggy and kitty hospital, I was greeted with some strange cone of plastic. Seriously do you really think I’ll let you near me with that thing?? Around my head??  I think not!!

I was itchy, I was sore and all I wanted to do was check myself out and cool down the soreness maybe with a lick or two.  But NO, that was discouraged vigorously with constant interruptions!!   So then a call was made to Dr. Prieto, the surgeon and the next thing I know a cool, but smelly substance called Listerine was placed around my stitches. Emphasis “AROUND” the stitches. That my friends, was something I did not want to smell. The next thing I overheard was someone saying “Problem solved”. Yep, you win, problem solved.

So if you’re looking for a sure fire method of keeping the pups from messing with their stitches,  Listerine does work.  Again, emphasizing “AROUND” the incision or stitches.  I’m glad there were no slip ups!

The Incident

I’m sad, so sad to know that doggy daycare is over. No more running with the pack, playing hide and go seek, or tug of war. And no more afternoon snacks!

Drax sad

Now that my “Dad” and hunting buddy has recuperated from surgery, it really isn’t necessary for me to be sent to the ranch.   It was so much fun getting to run freely with the other hunting dogs. However, there were a couple of pups that really weren’t very fond of me being there.  You know how it goes, the new kid makes friends, but the popular kids don’t like you taking over their territory!!

And then there was “The Incident”, the moment that I got carried away when there was all this barking and taunting from another dog. I was barking back, trying to stand my ground.  Then suddenly, not knowing who or what  came up behind me, I turned and grabbed something, (some call it biting) and it turned out to be the arm of my young human!!  I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I had no idea what was going on. Oh,no!!  Is that blood??  I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I didn’t know in the heat of the moment if I was being attacked!

It was all too crazy after that with some loud yelling for me to get in the truck.   Off we went back home.  I’m not really sure but that may be the real reason I wasn’t going back to the doggy daycare ranch. I’m sure it didn’t help anyway.

I’m happy to report that the bite didn’t leave too much of a mark on his arm and that he still loves me!  He doesn’t blame me either, it was an honest mistake after all.

Mother’s Little Helper

No, it is not a Joke!

You may not realize it, but I  really have proven to be somewhat of an asset around the house. Of course all you usually hear about are the times I  chew things up!

Or about all the  times I stole  things off the counters and sometimes out of the sinks.  (Not the knife, the egg-roll, and it was delicious!)

You may even have read a thing or two about the chaos that Diesel and I stir up…on a somewhat regular basis.

But what no one realizes is  that everything I do has in some way helped.

After I chew or tear up stuff, it becomes that much easier to fit into the trash. And seriously, there are no more dishes in the sink for me to grab or food and other stuff left lying around on the counters!  See?  How neat everything has become, “your welcome”!

As for all the playing around with Diesel, sorry, nothing good comes out of that.  Oh, wait, you don’t have to spend as much time with me  when we’re in a vigorous  game of tag!! But sometimes you do get caught in the middle of it, “sorry”!
